Minutes of the April 2006 meeting

Correspondence

Western Bypass

Letter from Paul Lucas: We received a letter from Paul Lucas advising the proposed Western Bypass study has been expanded greatly. It will look at all transport issues for greater west Brisbane area. A consortium is now being chosen to conduct this study and oversee community consultation process. The Gap Community Association will be on the stakeholder database. Study to start soon. There is no doubt our association has had a major impact on the government changing its stance on this issue.

Gap Creek Road: Letter from BCC. A study of this road has been completed and is now being considered by Cr. Graham Quirk, Cr. Geraldine Knapp and Cr. Margaret de Witt. GCA will stay in touch with Geraldine about what’s going to happen.

$2000 Grant Money: The association was approached to submit an ABN (Australian Business Number) to the Brisbane City Council before the cheque could be issued. As we are a not-for-profit association, we are not required to have one. Andrew contacted the BCC regarding this.

The Gap Business, Trade & Community Expo: This is being organised by The Gap Chamber of Commerce and will be held at The Gap State Secondary School in the G.A. Robertson Hall on Thursday, June 29 from 12 noon until 8 pm.

The GCA is interested in holding a stall on the day. Andrew has mailed off a registration form. Having a stall is free.
This is as a great opportunity to raise our profile in the community.

An attendance roster would need to be drawn up. Please consider giving an hour of your time to this wonderful opportunity. Let’s show the community that we are both active and enthusiastic. More details at the May meeting.

Ad in The Western Echo: We are going to trial having an ad and article in The Western Echo each quarter starting May ‘06. We aim to have a half page piece in May, August, November and February ‘07 editions. We’ll see if the article is successful in promoting our group a bit more, what we are up to and possibly attracting new members etc. Cost is $91.30. We need to have a proof to Philippa Wightman at The Western Echo by 26 April. Tony is drafting a piece.

Anzac Day: Andrew and reps from GCA have been invited to attend the Anzac Day march and service at The Gap on April 25. Andrew will be attending and has RSVPd.

Wagner’s (Proctor) Quarry: Andrew has received a letter from the Lord Mayor? Cr. Knapp gave feedback, quarry to close in four years.

The Gap Sports Club: Andrew has written to Cr. Knapp regarding a meeting with a sub-committee to discuss the future of the sports club. The venue is seen as a possible ‘community centre’. What could be done to make it more appealing for community groups to use?

April Financial Report

  • Two new members and a $10 donation. Fourty-four members in total.
  • Bank balance $777.91

Financial report moved by Tony Barker and seconded by Frank Schofield. Carried.

GCA Banner

The association had a banner made some years ago. Andrew will bring it to the next meeting to discuss its condition and to see what information needs updating on it. GCA may need to look at having a new banner made.

Around the Table

Cr. Knapp:

  • Funding has been approved for traffic lights to be installed at the intersections of Settlement Rd & Kaloma Rd and Settlement Rd & Chaprowe Rd.
  • Gap Creek Road: Geraldine has met with Cr. DeWitt and Cr. Lucas regarding the upgrade and sealing of the road. An internal report has been written with no decision being made as yet.
  • Gap Creek Road is classified as a district access road.
  • Brisbane Forest Park to become a National Park

Response

  • Once the road is sealed it will attract a constant traffic flow into and through The Gap.
  • Speeding, noise, pollution and safety are concerns.
  • Trucks will use the road, adding to noise, pollution, road wear and further safety issues.
  • Impact on the environment.
  • GCA would like to see that there is the opportunity for community consultation.
  • GCA will seek community feedback in the form of a questionnaire.
  • Once the road is sealed what happens after that? A further upgrade?
