The year ahead for the GCA
This year promises to be an active and challenging year for the GCA with a number of significant issues threatening to impact on our beautiful suburb. Already we are witnessing the spectre of Settlement Road becoming a major 4-lane road/highway, connecting with Samford, Illowra, Payne/Dillon Roads and slicing right through The Gap with a huge increase in traffic numbers and pollution!
The GCA is prepared for these challenges and will be actively progressing the views of Gap residents in the political, government and public forums.
Firstly some bad news: our Vice President, Maurie Meecham, and Treasurer, Phil Anderton, resigned as GCA committee members towards the end of last year citing business and personal reasons for their decisions. Their letters of resignation will be tabled at the next GCA meeting on Monday 26th February.
The affairs of the GCA remain in good shape, however, pending new appointments to these two vacant committee positions. President Terry Mendies will cover his role as well as the V.P. role and I will act as Hon.Secretary/Treasurer until a replacement Treasurer is appointed.
- In the mean time it’s business as usual. Terry and I have had a top level meeting with Graham Quirk and two of his senior managers at the Brisbane City Council regarding their proposed upgrade of Gap Creek/Dillon Roads. Details of that meeting will be advised at the next GCA meeting.
- We are taking advice from an Environmental Expert on the impact of the Gap Creek Road upgrade on environmental issues such as pollution, fauna and flora if such an upgrade goes ahead and already GCA members Joe Grimmond, Murray Vincent and myself have met with legal counsel regarding some of these significant environmental issues that could have a major impact on the BCC’s plans. A full report will be tabled at the next GCA meeting.
- The GCA Survey on Gap Creek Road and the Supplementary Survey on a number of local issues impacting on The Gap were an outstanding success with 1,350 responses received, 70% being opposed to an upgrade of Gap Creek Road.
- We are actively pursuing with the BCC the issue of Bus ‘pull in’ lanes on Waterworks Road between The Gap and the City - stay tuned for developments.
- We are looking at a more ‘member-friendly’ venue for our GCA meetings at the Ashgove Golf Club this year and hope that many of you will be able to join us at these meetings at our new venue, details of which are advised about a week before the meeting.
- Our membership numbers remain strong with many local residents having contacted the GCA expressing their support for our activities.
Consistent with our objective of keeping local residents updated on local issues affecting The Gap we will continue to keep you advised as issues occur.
