Traffic noise problems at Kevin Proctor Quarry

The Gap Community Association has written to Brisbane Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman, in regards to an excessive noise and traffic problem emanating from Proctor?s Quarry, Settlement Road.

The issue was the focus of much discussion at the most recent Gap Community Association (GCA) meeting. Graham Bigby, a local resident, addressed members about this matter and a leaflet drop he had recently organised. The main crux of the problem is as follows:

  • Wagner’s have contracted to buy the Kevin Proctor Quarry site located at 232 Settlement Road, The Gap (adjacent to The Gap Squash and Tennis Centre). They have commenced transporting rocks to this site for crushing. Wagner’s also currently conduct quarrying operations at a site at Samford Road, Ferny Grove.
  • Two noticeable problems have emerged in recent months: the excessive noise generated from crushing rocks at the Settlement Road site; and traffic congestion from heavy vehicles either entering or leaving this site and travelling via Settlement Road. On this latter point, Mr Bigby counted 67 trucks entering the Settlement Road quarry site between 7 am and 11.30 am alone on Saturday, January 14. The trucks undertake a very slow descent from the top of Settlement Road to the right hand turn into Proctor’s, holding up traffic a long time. Additionally, there is no right turn lane into Proctor’s and this can cause considerable delays or present a hazard to normal traffic if a truck is stopped in the middle of the road waiting to turn.
  • The quarry site is currently zoned ‘Extractive Industries’. Wagner’s is not carrying out the primary privilege of this zoning but are processing material brought in from another source. This should require another zoning as it does not come under any normal interpretation of extractive industries. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently issued Wagner’s with a notice advising them that the current noise levels are too high (4-5 times higher than they should be). At this stage, GCA has not heard of a formal response from Wagner’s to the EPA.

I am a resident at Ormeau actively involved in endeavouring to stop a new quarry application by wagners. Any assistance on performance (or lack thereof) by wagners would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Could i bring to your attentiion the fact that heavy ‘”articulate” haulage vehicles start use Settlement Road (a local not Main Road) before 0500am - this am it was 0445. The noise is reverberates throughout the area and wakes up my 8 year old; and we live 2 blocks back (Trebonne Street).

Could I kindly request you raise this matter as either a weight restriction on the road before and after certain times or an alternatve designated freight route needs to be designated. Samson Road would be much better.

Your consideration would be very much appreciated
    Regards.
